Individuals and Groups Africentric Governance and Leadership

Welcome to TAIBU Afrocentric Leadership and Governance Community Program. Black people of African descent have long been excluded from formal leadership opportunities across Canada and are rarely represented in leadership positions. A 2020 study on diversity in leadership demonstrates that in major cities like Toronto, Black leaders represent only 3.6% of all Board positions and 0.3% on corporate boards. Nonetheless, many Black people of African descent have functioned as leaders in many spaces across Canada, with significant impact on diverse Black communities. This Africentric leadership and governance program is designed to promote the representations of Black people of African descent on boards and other leadership positions. At the end of this program, you will have gained some necessary tools and skills to serve on Boards while supporting the interests and perspectives of diverse Black communities. To achieve this, this course explores 5 major areas:

  1. Africentrism
  2. Systemic anti-Black racism in Canada
  3. Africentric leadership principles and strategies
  4. Boards of Directors and fulfilling leadership responsibilities
  5. Storytelling and Positionality
